Can you guys add SpeedFun in Style filter ? 2016-12-13 17:12:40
As a SpeedFun player I find it somewhat difficult to find SpeedFun maps on this site since there is no Style filter for those kind of maps.

SpeedFun is distinctly different than FullSpeed so it doesn't fit in that category so they usually put it as a Race Style but I don't think that's good enough either since in that category there are plenty of maps that are not even similar to SpeedFun so again it's difficult to filter just SpeedFun maps out.

I think that SpeedFun deserve its own Style category since it's distinctly different than existing categories and there are plenty of SpeedFun maps on this site...so I am asking if you could add SpeedFun in Style filter ?

I haven't heard about that style before. Can you describe more exactly what it is? Isn't it essentially just fullspeed with powerslides in addition to speedslides? It seems very familiar to traditional fullspeed for me.

Anyway, if a new trackstyle was added, you won't find most previous maps on there since the style wasn't there when they were uploaded.

At the moment the best workaround is to visit speedfun servers and add authors you know build speedfun maps as Favourite Authors, and check their new uploads out ;)

Well I would say that is closest to FullSpeed style but it's also very different.

First of all it is not full speed, you actually need to control your speed, release the acceleration in certain turns to get the optimal speed and angle. In some turns you need to slide or powerslide to achieve that same result.
It has more turns and more tighter turns than FS.
There are also more precision jumps and air control compared to FS maps.
It can also have transitions like grass to road or dirt to road and vice versa in which you also have to know technique to get good speed and angle.
Only in some maps you can do speedslides but usually a small/controlled ones which are usually much harder to perform than the long ones like in FS maps. In most of the maps with long turns you actually want to avoid any slides because there is usually no space nor speed which would allow you to speedslide.
It can also have nascar turns (tilted roads) and aggressive turns.

All in all very different than FS, not necessarily harder than FS (good FS players are usually very good in SF) but certainly more technical and it has more action to it.

Yeah, of course, I am aware of that. However it would be great to see new maps placed in that category and being able to filter those SpeedFun maps conveniently and efficiently.

That is exactly how I've been doing it since forever but there is a big drawback:
I know the most active SpeedFun map builders, teams and servers now so it's easier for me find SF maps but when I just started playing it was hard for me to find SpeedFun maps for this sole reason.
Also what if I wanted to explore some new maps that are listed somewhere in the Race or some different category and I'll never be able to find those because it's too tedious to go and check every map separately to check if it's SpeedFun map or not.

I think that SpeedFun deserves its own category because there are certainly quite a few SpeedFun teams, maps, players and servers to prove that, there was also SpeedFun ESL cup so I think that proves that SpeedFun is unique TM style...and also it's not like its new style, it existed forever but it wasn't ever quite acknowledged and accepted. I think that it should be.

Look at SpeedTech, only difference compared to normal Tech is speed yet it has its own category.
SpeedFun compared to the FullSpeed has much more differences as I already mentioned above yet it doesn't deserve its own category ?

I agree with Lucid, and he has many good points already.

- It may not initially seem that different from fullspeed for some, but just the variation in the ways to approach a given corner is massively expanded: noslide, release, powerslide, speed drift, braking, etc., sometimes being as tight as speedtech, even with dirt or grass corners. I feel that that speedfun has always promoted all-around driving skill, similar to the recent Frostbeule, Spam, and other weekly mixed competitions. And even though fullspeed can have some technical parts, I feel that speedfun takes that even further.
- As Lucid mentioned, speedfun has reached ESL competition level recently, and speedfun has had years and years of community competitions since TMN/TMNF that has rivalled the size of some of the fullspeed and tech competitions.
- The 60-90k rounds servers in Stadium are almost always based on speedfun, since TMN/TMNF.
- Making a specific category for Speedfun would also encourage mappers to have to option of building speedfun.
- Also I feel speedfun has some of the biggest potential in mapping currently, especially with all the new ESL and custom blocks. Having mapped speedfun for 4+ years for both general and competition play, I feel there is still so much possibility that can be found in it, arguably much more than in the 'standard' styles.
- And I really don't see any downsides of adding it; I highly doubt TM will have a flood of new styles anytime soon.

As someone who grew up on Stadium Speed-Fun server and started off trackbuilding with Stadium Speed-Fun and only later expanded to other styles and environments, I'm really torn on this.

For the Stadium online community Speed-Fun might be a big part. First for the one who love that style and second for all the others who have learned to avoid Speed-Fun servers due to them not liking most of the tracks.
For me Speed-Fun is the combination of Speed-Tech and Fullspeed. Having elements like Walls and Loops and techniques like SDs and S4Ds, yet also include drifting or at least releasing for some turns. So yeah, it's definitely a distinct style... in Stadium...

The thing is... it only exists in Stadium under this name. In every other environment it's simply called 'Race' like it's been here and on TMX. It would never occur to me to call a similar track in Canyon/Valley/Lagoon/whatever Speed-Fun. So I'm really not sure if we should add another Track category just for Stadium. Especially if we then would have to draw a line between 'Race' and 'Speed-Fun' and I have no idea how to do that tbh...
