Driving the two of them is pretty similar. Right? Am i missing something huge here?
Yes they are similar in some way, and on some trial tracks you could do exactly that, and it would be a RPG, but that's not the point. They look very different from each other because of this, but when you're building RPG, you're building somewhat realistic. Trial only needs you to place a few floating blocks in the air. Trial also lacks the atmosphere you have on a RPG, like getting the feeling of driving in an entirely different environment. I can agree that the driving style might be comparable, but they're also very different. Trial only focuses on doing really hard stunts to get from a to b and are mainly shorter compared to RPG. RPG focuses more on doing some hard stunts, but there's is a bigger variety, some spots you might only be required to drive almost straight forward only to get a glimpse of the scenery and getting to know the story.
Occam has done a very good job explaining the difference too, might want to read that too if you're still in doubt.

The point is, no they're not the same, there is a reason we have always had trial-only servers and RPG-only servers, and RPG and trial-servers. There's a few, but they're the exceptions, it's like you might not want to mix fullspeed and technical maps on a server if you want to practice one style.
tl;dr - Separating RPG and trial will make it easier for everyone, imo. =)
